-Filter Help! K&N or Tru Flow?-
I own a 2005 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7 and currently have a K&N Filtercharger sitting in the airbox. I just ordered the True Flow intake kit and can't decide whether to use the included True Flow filter, or keep my K&N and use it in conjuntion with this system. Just so you know, this system uses the stock airbox. The True Flow is a foam filter and keeps almost all dirt out of your engine, but I can't help but feel like it's more restrictive than a K&N. True Flow's performance tests did reveal just how much debris the K&N lets through. I also feel like the K&N and this system would make a killer combo, but I don't want dirt in my engine any more than the next guy. What should I do fellas?
Use the true flow, I'm sure it will work ok. I myself use the amsoil air filter which is foam over paper & have never had a problem. I think the foam catching all that extra dirt is worth it.
I'm thinking of keeping the K&N since so many people use them, never report problems with them and K&N states that no engine damage will occur with them. I might go somewhere that has a dyno and see if the difference shows, in which case I'll choose the filter that begets higher gains.
I you drive where its real dusty and don't keep the filter cleaned and oiled real good then it will let dust in more then a regular filter. For mostly paved, small runs on dirt roads you are fine. Even if you have to drive several miles on dirt road every day most people won't notice the difference in engine life. Biggest difference is in dirt bikes/quads that run constant in dusty conditions. Seen few quad motors that went early with the biggest suspect being the Air Filter.

I'm really using this truck 90% on road and off road only during hunting season. I think the K&N should do just fine, but I'll obviously keep the True Flow in case I change my mind.
I prefer the AFE Kit. I have some real issues with K&N, one of which is quality of product. For years I have always raved about K&N, but IMHO there are some flaws in the design and instal of the kits for the 5.9 and 4.7.
I use the new AMSOIL EaA air filters. They block more dirt and allow great air flow. Here's a link to read about them:
