Default RE: which V8 is better 4.7 or 5.9

I'm new to all this forum stuff but here goes:
I own an '01 Ram 1500 quad cab with a 5.9. It's got an AirRaid intake with the K & N filter and a Flowmaster exhaust. It sounds nice but only gets about 11 mpg.
We also have a '00 Durango (wife's ride) that has the stock 4.7 and 3.52(?) gears. It's quiet, efficient and dependable.
I recently ordered an '04 Dakota quad cab with the 4.7 and 3.92 gears. I plan on immediately installing the Flowmaster and an intake. Then I'll be able to draw some comparisons between the two 4.7s.
I like the 5.9 in the Ram. It pulls pretty good. Gears would probably help but since Mommy says I can only have one toy, the Ram has to go so I'll never see her with the gears (or any other mods, for that matter...). I'm bummin'.
Anybody looking for a real pretty black truck? I'll upload some pics when I learn how...

Hope you all have a Happy Easter!

Well see I have a Dakota whit the 5.9 not an R/T but its a 4X4 and I love how it handles in the dunes way better than any of full size pick ups, jeeps, blaizers and hummers.

Cool! Welcome to DF. What year is your truck? Just to let you know we have separate Sub Forums. They go by Generation. Ya I have a 5.9 too. I have passed all of those on the trail too. The slightly lighter body then the Full size along with the power makes these trucks fast and powerfull.

I had my truck dyno'd. It's got the standard 4.7L

but instead of an auto, it's got the getrag 6 speed, my guessing, is this is a very efficient trans, as I put down 197rwhp, and 296rwtq with the only mod I had being a cai...

Well as far as being a stronger engine that would be wrong. The 4.7 has a bedplate not main caps which is super strong.

Also when my jeep was stock I beata dakota R/T 2 times in a row. I love and hate the 4.7 VS 5.9 topic.

It comes to highway cursing it seems as though the 4.7 is best suited for this truck. To explain, unlike the V6 which strains to make it up hills and the 5.9 which shows its burly exhaust note at every stab at the throttle, the 4.7 V8 coupled to its standard 4-speed automatic transmission keeps its calm in almost all situations.

Both engines has their unique characters, both has some good as well bad sides. Ist upon you what you prefer the efficiency or power.

4.7 has better fuel efficiency & get better mileage. On the other hand 5.9 can produce better torque 7 power.

So the choice depends on efficiency or Power.

If efficiency I prefer 4.7
If power I prefer 5.9
