I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7 with 208k. I did an oil change about 700 miles ago. I have read that fram are junk filters so this time i stepped up to a wix. I've had the truck about 4 years. During this recent "polar vortex" experience in cleveland, temps got down to -7. When starting the truck after sitting for a while, it would take a long time before it would register any oil pressure. You could hear the oil pump making noise. the check gauges light would come on but eventually i would have oil pressure, less than a minute but felt like forever. I use 5w30 full synthetic oil. yesterday i started the truck, it was 14 degrees, it did it again so i switched back to fram. today i started the truck at 37 degrees no problem. my typical oil pressure hot is 35 to 40 psi. cold 50 to 60. I cut open the wix oil filter and the oil looked black, like the oil has never been changed. I took the filter to a neighbor who is a master tech who said the oil filter looked like it had 3k on it. While the filter element looked black, there was no metal shaving or chunks of goo. on the attached picture please note the distorted filter element and steal housing.
My question, why did it take so long to build oil pressure? Damaged oil filter,(i dont think so). Sludged up pick up? if so, add sea foam? Thanks
Normal. When it's cold, the oil is harder to pump, and also harder to suck up out of the pan. When you shut the engine off, most of the oil in the pickup tube drains back into the pan. At initial start-up, the pump has to re-prime, and then build pressure. The harder the fluid is to move, the longer that takes. I think they suggest 0w20 for severely cold temps? (not that we see them that regularly here.....)
0w20 in my Dakota with a 4.7 and it starts up just like summertime at -20 ND temps.FYI nothing wrong with fram. The tough guard is good and I can't remember the name of the step up from that.
