Best sounding muffler on 3.9?
Hey guys, i've recently purchased a 2001 Dakota SLT club cab 3.9 auto with 60,000Kms. I've done a few intake mods as suggested on forums, but i need a throatier exhaust tone...
I dont want something that sounds stupid or insanely loud, just a nice deeper rumble to give it some tone.
I was thinking a Flowmaster 40 but thought it might be too loud? Not sure.... Also considered a magnaflow.
What are you guys running? Whats a muffler that will give me a nice smooth throatier tone??
Thanks- Neil

Flowmaster 40 standard hands down the best on the 3.9L had that on my 03 SXT 3.9L and loved how it sounded.....at idle sounds like a V8 and when you get on it nice and deep....don't waste your money on the Flowmaster Detla or SUV series just got the standard 40 and with a nice 3" chrome tip/s you can't go wrong.
I have a 40 on mine. There is not 1 thing to complain about. Its not too loud, its got a nice deep aggressive tone. People that have no clue think your rolling with a v8 between the framerails. Then they think your a smart *** when you say no....it's a v6.
My setup is just a single side exit though. I am thinking about changing all of this since in PA, or at least around here it seems you can get away with just getting the exhaust past the cab. I cant think of a better way to reduce weight and or backpressure then eliminating half the exhaust system. That and I just really like how they look without a tail pipe.
My .02

Have a 3.7 with a flo suv 50. At first I wanted sound, but now I am into gas mileage. I'm getting 3 to 3.5 mpg better. I never would have thought that. True you wont wake up the neighbors, but does sound nice. If you want a louder, not so sure deeper, go with the 40. Thought about taking out my front resonator for more sound. After seeing the improved gas mileage I'm not touching anything!

flowmaster 40...hands down. not to loud and not to subtle. has a nice throaty sound to it. like others have said, you'd think there is a V8 in it. i know cause my neighbor has a dodge ram with a V8. Very Nice! (the flowmaster that is)
i had a 40 series orignal on my 00 3.9 with dual 2.50 pipes out the rear and i hated it. it sounded real nice at idle but anything after that was awful. way too much drone in the cab, and it only lasted about 3 years on my truck before one of the outlets rotted off. i will never buy another flowmaster unless its for a v8.
or those with the flowmaster 40 series. Did you only change the muffler or did you change the pipes as well?
I am looking to add a flowmaster 40 series tomorrow and wondering whether to replace the muffler only or to add pipes as well.
I was thinking muffler only since I do a lot of highway driving any help would be great.
I have an 02 dakota QC 3.9 and also have k&n air Filter
