Just bought my 1998 Dakota Sport 2 days ago.
It has 151k miles and is listed in KBB at $4300 to $5300.
In it's present condition, the $4.3k is probably the current value.
Putting another $1 to 1.5k into it should get it up to top value.
I paid $1,500 for it.
The major problems are:
The interior smells like an old stale ashtray.
Tranny needs bands adjusted.
Very minor paint and body issues on Passenger side.

The tranny problem is not a problem.
I took it into the shop that rebuilt the tranny on my 2500 CTD.
They said that the problem is most likely caused by O-2 sensors.
Resetting the codes seems to stop the shifting problems until the check engine light comes back on.
I had forgot to mention that it also needs a new windshield.
The appointment has been made.
The smell is now the biggest problem.
Detailing the interior should take care of that.
After that, I'll take bids on the paint and body fixes.

What I paid
I recently purchased 2000 dodge dakota quad cab 4.7 v8 slt 4x4 with 138,000 miles with 3" lift,flowmasters, 33" BF Goodrich A/T for 3000$ from navy guy moving from va beach to Florida and had to sell. Found on Craigslist for 4k and paid 3. Replaced transmission filter because of it sticking in 4th every now and again basic tune up, tie rod ends and planning to do plenty more. Love the truck and learning about it. Many say I got a good deal I think I did ok.

1993 3.9L Dakota. 365,500 miles. I got it from my football coach for free. He was going to send it to the scrap yard so I asked if I could buy it from him. He said, "****, you can have it". I guess he didn't want to deal with dragging it out there and all... I put 100 dollars into it for a new battery and terminals and then a oil change. She's still puttin' around town. Now, It currently has 366,400 miles.
