Default funky transaxel

my 1985 daytona turbo Z 5-speed has problems going into reverse. if i shift it nicely iit wont go in it stays like in first. but if i be a bit rough on it i hear a "click" and its in reverse. anyon eknow what would cause this? i have parts car and it seems to shift good, should i switch the linkage or what?

Does it have the reverse lockout that you have to pull up on to shift in reverse? If it does you should take the boot off the shifter and make sure the lockout is functioning properly.

ya i does. i took everything apart a week or two ago to try and tighten the shifter any everything like it says in the haynes manual ive got but it didnt help much . how do i check it working properly?( the lock-out device)

You make sure it lifts all the way up to allow the shifter to move into the reverse postion without a lot of effort.
