AWD (again)
I'm new to the forum so I thought I would take some time and read through the posts. I found one asking about awd. It was shot down pretty fast. I know that rwd is more the common conversion for these cars, for obvious reasons, it screams for it. Though the lure of awd is very strong for me. I've thought about it for a very long time. I own an 85 turbo z with a blown motor.
I know that you can put a v8 in these cars; so I sat down and thought about what vehicles came stock with awd and came up with what I thought would be the perfect donor. The 1991 Chevrolet Syclone. 4.3l turbo with awd.
I'm posting to get some thoughts and insights from some people that may know the chasis a little better than I do, so I know what kind of fabrication I'm going to have to do to make the awd fit. Thanks for your time.

Good luck finding one, less than 3000 produced. The Syclone is worth more than the AWD daytona would be. You would probably be better off using aneclipse or subaru as a donor vehicle. Any AWD conversion you do will need different suspension front and rear and different k-member up front along with motor and trans mounts. If you got $5,000-15,000 sitting around to do this... you can try.
I'm not talking actually taking a syclone and dismantaling it, I'm saying I would take the concept (4.3 turbo awd) Take a stock 4.3 put aftermarket internals so it can handle it and go from there. Or if there is a better donor car (conceptually even as the syclone is) I would appreciate the input on that idea.
Your best bet, as already mentioned, is to go with a Talon/Eclipse turbo AWD for such a project. If you want to go wilder you might go with the Stealth RT/TT or 3000GT VR4 3.0L V6 twin turbo AWD parts. Both of these are more abundant and cheaper when it comes to parts than the Syclone parts are. A great idea I had, but not the money to see it through, was to make the Daytona a mid-engine RWD. Then again I always wanted to clone the Chrysler concept car that was in the movie The Wraith.
I've never been a big fan of the Talon/Eagles (Too many issues after modding) They were the cool thing around here when I first got into the scene, but everybody kinda laughs at them now. [sm=boink3.gif]Now the Stealth RT/TT-3000GT VR-4 on the other hand. I've seen some mean cars with that setup. I have a buddy that built one, I just may look into that idea.
I think the mid engine would be crazy, but a little outta my league.

The crappy thing is that if dodge would have produced the daytona for another year or so...awd would have been put in them from the factory. In 94 they were going to build a vnt awd daytona...which would have been cool. I wouldn't bother with an awd conversion....for the money youre better off with a stealth or vr4. I seen somewhere that carroll shelby back in like 86 made an awd turbo z....for himself.
mother mopar did allow a oddity know as the awd minivan to be made back in its early years. there used to be alot of talk about adapting this to a daytona or shadow as they are very simmilar in lay out. if any thing if your dead set on looking in to this find out what you can on the awd mini vans and see if this can be adapted in some way. heres a link to help you get started.

I always thought that Dodge should have offered a AWD package on the Tona's as well as a 16 valve 4 banger too. Looks like using a AWD mini van to do a conversion is a good way of approaching it.
