If you haven't tried this already, look in your Hayne's manual, page 52, section 29 "Ignition timing check and adjustment". You'll need a timing light, which cost around 20-30 bucks at Auto Zone. They may also be able to look up the correct timing for your car, if the emission control label isn't under the hood anymore.
