87 Daytona.. Power Loss light.. obtaining codes
For the past 9 months or so, my 87 Daytona has been running rough with the power loss light on. Unfortunately I have waited till the last minute and in order to renew my decals I must pass the emission inspection.. which i cannot do the way it is running. I have read several posts saying that I can obtain the fault codes by turning the ignition switch on and off three times quickly, but it is not working. Any other ideas for getting my codes and fixing my car!? The shops around here charge over $100/hour for labor and who knows if they'll even fix the right thing.. please help!
The ignition check should work. What I do is turn the key forward one click, just enough to unlock the steering wheel. The you have to turn the key to "on" 3 times withing 5 seconds, then watch your check engine or power limited light and count flashes. If no codes are stored you should still get a "55"- five flashes, a pause, then 5 flashes. That the "end of codes" code...
hmm.. i've tried every variation of that method that i can think of (turning the car completely on and off, repeating the on off cycle more than three times, etc) and i've spent well over an hour working at it, but the only thing i ever get is the power loss light comes on for two seconds and then goes blank.. there is no flashing. I did get the car inspected today, and to my surprise it did better than i had expected, but it still failed.. it received a 54 CO rating instead of the required 44 (whatever those numbers mean) in the 15 mph test, but it passed the other 9 or so tests with plenty of room. The technician noticed that a few of the vaccuum hoses looked to be cracked/loose, and suggested that I replace all hoses before putting a dime into it otherwise.. i guess that's what i'll be doing this weekend.. the car's tags expired May 31, so until it passes and i can renew the registration, it's illegal to drive or even park on the street

replace those lines that looked cracked and then find a computer that will work..
is it a turbo or non-turbo car?
For whatever reason, the car won't even flash 55 to let me know that everything's normal.. but the good news is that i replaced all the vacuum hoses and passed inspection. Mission accomplished. Thanks for all your help.
