Default Engine Identification Number

Quick question. 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z 2.2 Turbo 2 engine ID number- have it but can't find any place to decipher it. Trying to find out when the engine was made, I have the choice of before 3/88 or after 3/88. With the manufacter date of the car it could be either one. Is there a site that will break down the engine ID?

Why do you want to know when it was made? Are you trying to find out if it was made on a friday shift?

Very funny, smart a$$! LOL! I've been looking for a re-ring kit for it and every place I've stopped at and called asked me if the engine was built before or after March of 88. Wasn't sure there was a changover or not, so I wanted to check the engine ID to see.

I looked through the part numbers for pistons on Advance Auto's website ( http://www.partsamerica.com ) and the pistons for the turbo 2.2L are the same part number for 86, 87, 88, and 89 which leads me to believe there are no differences in the pistons, so there shouldn't be any difference in the piston rings. Although it might just be a change of the material used, you could see if the store can order both sets and you can take back whichever set you don't need.

I'm actually not going to worry about it for now... I have been doing work on this car (a friend of mine's) and rebuilt the front end and pulled some dents on it. In a few months this car will become mine, since he doen't want to put anymore money into it. It just needs to make the drive from Grand Rapids Michigan to Davidson North Carolina in October. See my post about the "mystery miss"...
