Default 2.2L Turbo II.... General Questions

I'd like to first say hi to everyone and say that this is my first post. I have a few questions about the Turbo II engine potential and its availabilty. I currently own an '87 Toyota MR2 and am in the market to do an engine swap. This engine may just be up my ally, at least I think it might. My questions are as follows, general answers are fine:

How hard is it to source a 2.2l turbo II engine and drivetrain?
What is the parts availability like?
How much reliable power can be produced from this engine?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this offered in a front wheel drive car, or is there a front wheel drive trans that will bolt up?
How much is one looking at spending to do a rebuild on one of these engines and what is the aftermarket support like?
What is the engine code so that I can try to source one from a junkyard or as a crate motor if applicable.
Are there any forums discussing performance issues with this engine?

I'm basically looking to achieve 180+ whp out of the engine to upgrade my maybe 105 hp i'm currently getting out of my aged 4A-GE Toyota engine. I small reliable turbo engine with great power potential would be great in the back of a 2300LB 2 seater. Just thought that this might be the forum to ask a couple of quick questions.

Thanks for the help.

Mark

Its a powerful motor, I have somwhere around 247 HP at the engine, so i dont think 180 whp would be an issue, as long as you can find a motor and trans to work with, the parts availability is pretty easy, you can buy rebuilt turbos for the thing all day long if you like. Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks for the info. This might just be the swap I've been looking for. Any other information out there that I should know? How much power are people getting out of this engine and how much did it put you back?>

The Turbo II's require the use of the A-555 Getrag manual transaxle or stronger trans. They couldn't use the eariler A-525 manual that was used in the Turbo I's or any of the automatics, they were far to weak to handle the power of the Turbo II. Getting over 180 WHP will be easy out of a Turbo II and being intercooled they are vedry reliable. Here is another link to plenty of Turbo II parts and upgrades good for 500+ horsepower or better: http://www.forwardmotioninc.com

How hard would it be to find an A-555 Getrag trans and would it be better to use an A-568 or would there be fitment issues? I'm basically trying to stamp a general price tag on this swap and want to make sure availabilty of parts wouldn't slow me down once I got underway.

What sort of torque figures are people getting with their setups? At 200 whp, what sort of torque can this engine produce and at what rpms does the power reside in the engine (what is the powerband generally like with this engine)?

The torque is king on the 2.2/2.5's. Expect 330 tq. whees if you are making 200 whp. Power is from 2-4000 rpm.

A 568 is better than a 555 and would fit the same, the difference being that the 568 also has the superior non-lockout ring shifter. Parts would not be a problem for you. I would put the price of this setup to be max $1500 using a rebuilt engine, turbo, and trans.

have always like the toyota mr2 if i had ever goten one i wanted to take the twin turbo supra motor and put that in the back it would be a very deficult install but when you figur you could have a reliable motor that has 800 whp you can't go wrong.

Yeah, that is a dream that everyone has at one point. Only problem is that the supra is a front engine rear drive car. That makes it extremely difficult to drop that in the back of a car that uses a front engine front drive setup, but only in the rear. Even if you could mount it transversly (sp?), finding a trans to fit to it that could handle those power levels would be tricky. The best Toyota upgrade would have to be the 3sgte turbo engine that they put in the second generation mr2s. The only reason I'm not going that route is because the T2 engine from dodge will be cheaper and has more torque than the 3sgte.
