Default Idle Issues

Hello, I'm new to these forums, I was looking for a good Dodge Daytona community... seems like I'm late on the scene though every 2.2/2.5 website I visit is half link-dead and Mopar is slowing killing off all their parts. Anyways hi everybody!

My '91 Daytona 2.5L TurboI automatichas been having idling issues. When I start the car revs up to about 2100rpms then after a couple minutes it will lower to 1500rpms, but it will occasionary surge up to about 1750rpm and never seems to stay still for more than 5 seconds. I tryed lowering the timing because that's what I was told was the problem when I baught the car. The car bogs down or stalls if I set the timing any lower than how it is now though (I'm not using any measuring devices just going by how the engine idles and drives when I adjust the timing, yeah I know not smart but I'm poor right now). When in drive the car idles at about 1100rpms steadly.

Thanks for your help guys (and girls).

Hello,
My 89 turbo had that problem also and I changed the tps sensor ( Throttle position sensor) and that seemed to cut it out but once in a blue moon when I start it up it revs to like 1500 -2000 but then it goes back to normal.

What's the stock idle for a 2.5 Turbo automatic anyways?

Idle problems have been addressed a lot on this forum and it always comes down to the throttle positioning sensor? map sensor? or theEGR valve needing to be cleaned. Getting theEGR valve off is the big problem as the steel connector pipe fitting nut is near impossible to break loose from the EGRvalve. I finally cut the pipe in half on the straight untapered section and got a 9/16" brass farell style tubing / pipefitting to put it back together with. (You have to cut about 1/2" out of the pipe to install the fitting, but cleaning the EGR valve wasthe needed fix as all is well now.

P.S. I changed the TPS twice and the MAP once before I cleaned the EGR valve.Good Luck.

Timing for the car is on the Emission Control Label under the hood. This will have the plug gap, idle speed, and timing info for automatic and manual tranmissions, plus all the emissions junk. Idle speed is usually in the neighborhood of 800-900 rpm. And make sure you set idle and timing "by the book". There's a procedure for bypassing the computer control to set the timing (unplug the coolant temp sensor, etc). Best bet is to buy a Haynes or Chitlins manual for the instructions. Haynes manuals are around $12-$15 and seem to have more usable information.

Thanks for all the replies I will try them... also would a bad/dirty EGR make a clicking/ticking kind of noise? Oh and where is it located? Thanks!

The EGR system is below throttle body and to the drivers side of the car, it bolts to the exaust manlfold and has a canister a filter a couple of vacume hoses plus the 9/16" steel tube .
