Ram security system dilema, need some help
Hey guys, I had a close call last night. I got a call from my neighbor at 3:00 a.m. advising me that someone was trying to break into my truck. Some punk dirt bag was admiring my truck when the neighbors dog woke them up. Lucky for me they ran the scum bag off and called the police. The crooks have been stealing a lot of the side mirrors of trucks and SUV's in my neck of the woods. I have a feeling that was what he was after. Anyway, first thing this morning I went down to my local Best Buy and purchased their top of the line Viper alarm system. This model had the works and even had a built in LED/pager on the remote that will vibrate if your alarm is triggered and you are with in 1 mile range. Unfortunately, the installer did not have the required modules that would make all the viper features work with our new Ram's. So plan B, I went down to the local Dodge dealer parts guys to see if I could order the factory Mopar security system EV1. No luck, the dealer guys could not find a part number in their accessories catalog and nothing came up on-line. I know the system exists because several Laramie's had the security system. I'm curious what kind of security does the factory system provide. What do you guys out there that have this on you truck think about it, does it have a shock sensor? This system is a module that simply plugs into the existing harnesses and uses the factory ECM. It should work with my existing key-less entry key fob. If anyone knows where to find the part number please let me know. For now, I will just have to sleep in my truck with my 9mm lock and loaded. In Texas, it's legal to use deadly force to protect your property. I love the Castle Law, thank you Rick Perry!!

Well your first problem was going to Best Buy to get a good security system. You need to visit a shop that speacializes in car security, they usually do car audio as well. You were probably looking at a Viper 5701 and that's a really good system but it needs to be installed by a professional. The guy at Best Buy was retarded because they already have the bypass module out for our trucks, i'm getting a 5901 next week on mine. The difference in an aftermarket alarm and the mopar alarm is HUGE! How much is your truck worth to you?

Either way I completely agree, take it to a real professional shop and have it installed right, I have a 5900SST on my Dak (the predecessor to the 5901) and it is light years ahead of the Mopar system available for our trucks and much more extendable. DEI (the manufacturers of Viper, Python, and a few other brands) are widely regarded as the best in the business with some of the highest quality systems.
jeremys88, when I took my concealed carry class about a year ago, we were told that you can use deadly force as long as they are on your property. The law used to be only if they were in your house. Now I am not a lawyer and I don't play one on TV, so if you think you might be using deadly force at some point you might want to make damn sure you have that legal right to do so. Jeff.
I'm currently serving on the Harris County Grand Jury and have had a few case concerning deadly force. The law was read to us and if you are protecting your property at night you can use deadly force, the day time it is a little different, I'm going to go into a lot of details. With that said, if a person should decide to shoot someone and kill them, be forwarned ....your life will change FOREVER and be prepared to spend $100,000 defending yourself.

As long as the perp is on your property and threatening your life, yes. If someone was going to steal an item, leave, you shot them when they were leaving your premises, you would be charged. Best bet is to ensure the bullet point of impact is in a area that you can recreate the steps back to where you stand linking to a shot made to protect your life= think ahead. Always watch your blind spots by the way.
From his description of the remote I want to say 5701 but unless BB lied to him (which wouldn't surprise me) 1 mile range would indicate the 5901. Viper lists the range on the 5701 at 2,000ft.

I'm sure it's a 5701 because that's the best BB carries and yes it's range is 2,000ft. BB lied to him, but it was probably some kid who had no idea what he was talking about.
Had the 5900SSt on my charger and it was awesome. 5901 just came out so that'll be going on the truck. DEI is second to none, Mopar is just pretty and makes the user feel safe. Don't be fooled
The castle law was passed last Sept. and it gives Texans the right to use deadly force to protect your property, i.e. home, car, business or workplace. It also makes it legal to carry a handgun in your vehicle (provision added in response to the high number of carjackings). Before, you could only legally carry a handgun in your vehicle if you were traveling, going to a sporting activity, moving or if you have a concealed carry permit. It also provides immunity from personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits. Before, if you shot a burglar in the butt, he could hire a lawyer and sue you. Any shooting fatal or not will have to be investigated by your local police and the findings will be brought before a grand jury. This law just gives us law abiding hard working tax payers the right to protect our families and property. Either way you guys that live in Texas should do some research and inform your selfs. It's pretty bad down here on the border. The Mexican cartels are going at it with the Mexican gov't and their hit men are running around all over the place on both sides. The cartels are sub contacting with gangs in the US side to steal trucks so they can take them into Mexico and use then to smuggle dope/illegals back to the US. Big powerful trucks that can go fast and haul heavy loads are in high demand. Down here you have to be prepared, you never know who you are dealing with. I prefer the dirty Harry philosophy, shoot first ask questions later. Thanks for the advise and info., I'll shop around to see what security shops have reputable installers. Most of the ones I have ran into look like pot heads and glue sniffers, full of tats and piercings. I feel safe with Best Buy because at least their guys are supposed to be MECP certified. Anywhere else you really don't know what your getting. I guess buyer beware!! FYI-The alarm I was going to purchase was the 5701 and the sales rep told me that the next gen Viper alarms were coming in a few weeks. He described a new model with a LCD screen on the remote. Have you guys heard of about any new upcoming features?
