Default Towing Questions

Hi. I have a 2009 HEMI Ram 1500 Quad 4X2 Sport. I am interested in purchasing a travel trailer. The one I like weighs 6590 dry. To be exact it's the KEYSTONE Sprinter Select 29BH. I don't know what my gears are and I don't know what my max towing is. Can anyone please help. I am also a VIRGIN to towing and travel trailers so any advise would help.

Man, you'd be right there at the mark dry. I'm assuming that you don't have the tow package with 3.92 gears.

More than likely you have the 3.55's.

I helped River booty tow his 09 Challenger to Ohio (14 hour drive) and it was a little much. Configured weight there was just over 7,000 pounds.

Panamag
1)Does your vehicle have the tow package, supplemental transmission cooler and class IV hitch?
2)What size tires? Yes they make a difference.
3)It is important to know what your gear ratio is.
4)What is your trim , ST, SLT or Laramie

To answer your question 5,800 lbs to 8,800lbs dependant on items 1,2,3 and 4

Thank You for replying. I have the SLT trim. I have 20's and It came with a tow hitch when I purchased it. It really upsets me that I don't know the gears I have and when I ask the dealer they look at me with the deer in headlights look. I have been told everything from 6800 to 10700 lbs.

The 4x2 quad cab SLT with 20 inch tires and 3.55 gears 1s 6700 lbs. If you happened to have a 3.92 ratio it would go to 7700 lbs.

The 10k figure you have been told is for the 2010 with 3.92. I know this as it was the reason I traded in my 08 for a 2010

One thing I will jump up and down to get the point across is, when you get a trailer, make sure you get a load balancing hitch. When you have all this and if you need help in knowing how to put it on properly. send me a message, I will get back to you about a few things. I have been hauling a trailer for years and have learnt a lot and seen a lot. I have even jack knifed a small truck with a trailer because the truck was not big enough to handle the trailer.

Looks like I will be downsizing to the smaller travel camper :-( I know they are adding the Equalizer sway control hitch. Is that the same as a load balancing hitch? This is turning out to be a greater journey than first I thought. I just want to be safe so my family and all of yours out there is not worried about a trailer disaster. F the dealership for telling me I could tow 10700 lbs. What if I would have purchased that trailer. AARRGGHHH

For the axle ratio, crawl under and look at axle tag on the rear between diff and right rear rim.

Go to your dealer (parts/service). Give them your vin number. They can print out a build sheet for your truck. It will give all the info regarding rear end, etc. It is free.

How many RPM's are you running at 60 mph? Manually shift into 5th and if you are running just under 1700rpm at 60 you have 3.55 gears. If it is more you have 3.92, if it is less you have 3.21. There are many threads on here about towing and that the 09's have been underrated for towing due to the lifetime warranty. My thoughts are if you have a brake controller and are not trying to pull it across the country once a week you will be fine and I wouldn't let a number make me change my mind about the trailer that I wanted.

These numbers are important. If you overload the truck it's going to handle poorly and possibly get damaged...

That being said, as I understand it, all the 2009 ratings have been "updated" to the 2010 ratings, because there are no hardware differences between 09 and 10, but they were underrated from the factory.
