Gear swapping!
Quick question for those of you that have swapped your gears. I am looking to change to a 4.56. For those of you that have done it, how much did it run you? What all did you get done with it? Thanks!
from what ive seen, gears are pretty much the same price range. between 200-400, depending where u get them. now where u get them put in at is totally different. what size tires are you running to put 4.56 in?
OK, got a quote from my usual place and they are quoting me $1895 plus tax for the ring and pinions and install. Is that good or is there somewhere in the DFW area that can do better?
My local 4x4 shop has a real good axle man there. I've sent probably close to a dozen people there over the last 4 or 5 years and not a bad install yet.
He charges $600 per axle for ring & pinion, master install kit and labor, or at least was still charging this last fall. He used to include a free follow up/inspection/break-in-lube change at 500 miles, but I think he charges $75 for that now.
IMO the brand of gears is not nearly as important as who you get to do the install. Shimming the ring/pinion in an AAM axle is a b*tch and needs someone who is not only experienced with gear work, but specifically in Dodge axles.
I have Genuine G2s, mainly because of the lifetime warranty, but I know guys running Motives, Yukons, Richmond and Precisions without a hint of whine in them.
$1895 (or $950 per axle) is at the higher end of the scale, that's up there with what 4 Wheel Parts charges and they are commonly considered about the highest. Of course, labor could be stupid high in your area and that may be in line. I'd check around some more or see if you can get the guy to at least include the follow up and lube change at 500 miles for that price.
Oh and also make sure whatever install kit they go with has Timken bearings...

Sweet. Thanks for all the good advice. This is what I like about this site, people who have already had the experience giving their 2 cents. Believe it or not, alot of people make their choices based on it. Love the feedback! Keep them coming!
I did front and rear on the FX4, Yukon 4.56 with master rebuild kit as well as fluid change after 500 mile break-in ran about 2300-2400 bucks. No whine or vibe at all. I only have 35's on it and IMO it is too much gear to be a daily driver with that size tire now. Re-gearing is one expensive mod but necessary with 37's if you want any decent performance back.
