Default Warraty Issue: Gas gage falls to zero - Low Level light activates

I have a 2009 1500 Hemi with only 10k miles. On a recent trip I suddenly noticed the low-level warning light had come on and the gas gage had fallen to dead empty. I knew I had plenty of gas, so I kept going.

Later I filled up, the gage worked fine for a while then fell to empty again.

Took it in to the dealer and they said they are replacing the fuel sending unit.

Does anyone know what needs to be done to replace that component? Is it internal to the gas tank? I just want to know what to inspect after the work is complete.

Anyone else have this problem?

More than likely, it's inside the fuel tank, probably attached to the internal fuel pump. I'm surprised that they can replace one, without the other.

Just ask for the old part.

Do not take it in with much gas in it. I am sure the tank will need dropped, which means they will probably drain it.

Yep, it's a PITA to drop a full tank.

They did indeed need to drop the tank and replace only the fuel sending unit, according to the paperwork.

The good news is I got a 1/2 tank of free gas....(and its the 32 gal version) Score!

Maybe the "fuel sending unit" is the entire fuel pump/pick up assembly??? Just a more high tech way of describing it.
