Buying a 32 foot enclosed trailer for the dragster. 27 foot box and 5 foot tongue. We have airbags on the truck that we keep at 20 pounds.

The camaro is 2700 pounds and the open trailer is 2500? pounds with the winch box loaded [600 pound tongue weight], plus gear in the bed of the truck: generator (100 pounds), tool box (45 pounds), jack (30 pounds), air compressor (20 pounds), and 20 gallons of fuel (130 pounds)

We don't have a 3/4 ton truck to move it with yet, but the trailer is pretty much bought and will be needing moved. It has brakes on all 6 wheels and will be empty. Realistically, would it be possible to tow it around with our 1500 short bed for now, as far as between the house and the storage lot?

The dragster is 298 inches from front bar (nose removed) to the back of the parachutes (rear wing removed), add about 1.5 feet with nose and wing installed. So no, a smaller trailer is not an option.

 

I pulled my 28 foot travel trailer (about 33 feet tongue to bumper and about 8500lbs with gear) to Alaska and back this summer about 5500km in total. No problems and can still pass people if I want to. (Just can't pass a gas station lol) you'll have no problem

 

did you use a weight distributing hitch? We have our old one, but would probably wait till we come across a 3/4 ton before we set it up, since it's vehicle dependent. The trailer has a flat nose trailer coupling on it with the flat adjustable height flange.

 

Ya I use an equalizer hitch. Makes a big diffrance in ride. You can do without but if you have it I'd set it up unless it's short hauls

so what's the difference between an airbagged half ton and a stock 3/4 ton, other than having the cummins up front?

 

Everything. The airbags do nothing to enhance towing capability or handling. They simply keep the back end of the truck higher. A 3/4 ton has all sorts of components that are heavier duty all around, including brakes, axles, frame, suspension, etc. Gearing is different. Towing capability is thousands of pounds greater. Vehicle weight itself is heavier so it is less 'overwhelmed' by a large trailer.

If you towed these larger trailers regularly with a 1/2 ton I think they would take a beating and start showing it. A 3/4 ton is made to work regularly like that. Plus, it just has that much more buffer in towing capacity and trailer towing is best done in the middle of your capacity rating, IMHO. Doesn't mean a 1/2 ton can't handle significant stuff, just not quite the same way.

We're looking for a 2WD diesel 3/4 ton that will be strictly for towing use, but having hard time finding one. They are all 4WD, which we don't want.

 

I imagine you will be be towing lots judging by those rigs in your shop Weight wise I think you would be alright as other users have stated. If your going to pull like I think your going to, I would be upgrading that ram! I did that a year ago and its night and day pulling, but I am sure you know that already. You will be alright for that short distance I think.

If it were me I would have purchased a gooseneck tho. Not taking into account money, or anything like that, but strictly pulling. A gooseneck to me is the way to go especially if your hauling something like 32' long. But that's just my thought!
