Default CPU temps

Ok I have a machine that I think is running extremely hot but I'm not sure. Google returns different answers so what are your opinions. Ok So it's an Intel Celeron D clocked as 2.93. It's not OC'd. All normal. But seems that the temps are in the high 40 to low 60 Celsius. I know my AMD Dual core is only around 38. So is 40's to 50's normal for a Celeron D?

Yes. That is perfectly acceptable.

If it starts getting into the mid 60s, I'd start worrying. Make sure your case is half-way clean of dust (canned air). According to what I've found, the temp where the Celeron D starts to get iffy is about 69 degrees C.

Thanks for the info jason. I did clean the case out it was relatively clean. Replaced the thermal paste just as an option. Didn't make much difference. But now burning mid 50's at full capacity so I think it will be ok. Monitor says it's overheating but I think the program has issues. Also says power voltages are fluctuating. But powersupply tests fine.

What brand of PSU are you using? How are you testing it?

It's a generic brand that came on a compaq. I have a psu tester so that's how I tested it. According to the monitoring program all the voltages that it monitors go to zero then right back up. So yea I think the program has issues. My personal program doesn't detect any changes in voltage.

Don't trust the tester.... Or that program....

Believe me on that one. I had a PSU that tested fine the other day blow up in my face. Literally. Ask Jason about that one as we were on yahoo chatting when it happened...

Not a fun experience for this fat man to leap across the room when something like that goes boom in your ear.

If voltages went all the way to zero, you'd have major issues. The PC may even just power off. However, those generic PSUs that manufacturers put into their desktops do tend to be flaky at times, especially after several years.

What programs are you using to monitor temps/voltages? Are you looking at CPU temp or core temp?

I am using speed fan as my trusty guide but the other one was intels intellimonitor software that came with the board. The machine runs fine that's why I think its the program being flaky. I am looking at the cpu temp that is being registered.

The programs that come with boards for that kind of thing are rarely good. Speed fan is usually decent, a good choice.

Unless you experience the board underclocking the CPU, the computer shutting down on its own, or CPU temps above 65, I'd call her good.

yea I replaced the thermal paste that was there with Arctic silver and now its down to mid 50's under load and the board isn't seeing any affects from the volatages. So I say it's all good. Thanks for the help.
