Default Dell Rant!!!

So... where to start.. Monday I got back from class went to turn on my computer. It would not turn on, so I called Dell tech support and they sent out a new motherboard. That was supposed to get replaced before 2pm on Tuesday. The on site tech did not get here until Thursday! As soon as he turns the computer on w/ the new motherboard he gets a blue screen error. Now the harddrive is gone or "going" like now I am on my computer in "safe mode", but any second I could get a blue screen. I have had at least 40 blue screens since yesterday. So I had to call Dell tech again and they cant get the harddrive out here until Monday... in the mean time I was planning on getting my important info off the computer... hmmm cant do that. The computer will not recognize USB memory sticks or CD-Rs So there is no way for me to save all my music and pictues.... Basically I am screwed and I have not had a computer for a week.

Your fault you didn't back up your data before you had a problem. Better luck next time.

Yeah. Thats why I have a desktop and laptop. But thats probably why I have two computers that don't work at the moment. But in Dell's defense, its probably not even a part they manufactured.

Usually a blue screen means you have a driver failure or a software failure. That doesnt mean your harddrive is dead or dying. If you have the XP installdisc that came with the PC, you might try to do an XP repair via the install disc.

If you still have the discs that came with the PC, you can also use the Diagnostics & Drivers CD to run a test on the HDD. Should take about 45 min....I would run it twice.....and if it comes up clean...chances are you just have a crapped out Windows XP. If that's the case, you can still get the data off the computer with a little work.

i coached a kid who was in computer forensics, and he said that his prof showed them "how to" get files off of a computer that had been in a house fire...

then again, my laptop wont connect to a wired connection...

very easy fix. find another computer, take your hard drive to that computer, plug it in, and use the other computer to get your files off that machine. Apparently your operating system, hardware configuration, or software settings are jinxed up somewhere. BUT, if you take the hard drive to another machine, you CAN get data off of it.

Unfortunatly, it is a laptop, not so simple just to take out the harddrive and plug it into another computer.... also it is the harddrive, not the OS. Sometimes when I boot up it will not even recognize the harddrive is there.... how they go out is in spurts... meaning it is not totally gone yet, but it is going.

Im just disgusted that a computer under warranty is taking more than a week to fix.
