Default 02 Intrepid Shifting problems???

I have an 02 and an 03 Intrepid SE, one silver and one blue, not that it matters :-)

Anyway, both cars have begun this shifting issue... Please let me explain..

When traveling at a constant rate of speed the car seems to be fine and will shift like it is supposed to, while getting there. However, if you let off the accelerator as when slowing for traffic or coming upon a traffic light or stop sign the car will down shift and then stay there. If you stop and take off the car will shift into second but will not shift any higher. The only correction is to pull over and stop, turn the car off, and then restart. It will be fine until your speed reaches high enough to shift into third gear and then if you slow down by releasing the accelerator, once again, it will down shift (fairly hard) and then you have to do the whole process over again.

The odd thing is though, it is random and doesn't do it every time!

If anyone has experienced this or know what the solution would be to correct this issue, the help would be greatly appreciated.
