Exclamation 2009 Journey SE - malfunction in the middle of the hwy

hey everyone,
so today, my 2009 Journey put the scare of a life time in me. my heart dropped.

was driving back home on the HWY (401) near the Mississauga area doing about 110-115km/h, had cruise control on. all the sudden, my car made a weird noise, engine check light came ON and then gas pedal stopped working. Luckily I had enough time/space to pull over on the side of the HWY safely.

Tried to start the car and it wouldn't turn. Tried about 5-6 times and no go. It sounded like it was going to but didn't. eventually it turned and started, but when speeding, it sounded like it had a grinding noise. almost sounded like i was driving a tank... and it was very slow. was trying to get speed and it felt like it was impossible. hit 80km/h and it felt like I was going 30/40km/h.

I got off the HWY, pulled over into a parking lot of a park. turned the car off. waited, turned it ON and everything worked fine. Check engine light was still ON.

after 2 hours of the car sitting still in my parking spot, I went down stairs to check it and everything was fine. it started without an issue and no check engine light.

any ideas what could be causing that?

Thanks

Thanks for the response. I took it to the shop and they checked the computer. Found 3 errors related to the Crank sensor being defective. It needed replacement.

Good deal. Check engine light on will always store the code, even if the light turns back off. First line of defence is to have the code read. That will tell you the problem 99% of the time. It is a good idea in this day and age to invest in a code reader for yourself. They can be bought for cheap and they pay for themselves the first time you use it to read a code.

Very true..

With the way repairs are going with this car, I may have to buy one. I have it at the shop at least once every 2 months if not less sometimes. I still have to take it in cause I am starting to notice a rubbing like sound or ginding when I turn the steering wheel to the left a big. say for example changing lanes on the road. it doesn't do it when turning the steering wheel to the right.

I dont recall if it makes the sound in park or not. I'll check tomorrow morning.

any ideas what that could be?

I checked the wheel wells and tires and nothing is rubbing. I just have to slightly turn the wheel, not enough for it to make a full turn and the sound would happen. Could it be power steering?

Thanks

Jack the front end up and have someone turn the wheel lock to lock while you observe. Try to pinpoint the sound that way.

The shop I go to had an open slot today, took the car in. Front right Wheel Bearing needed replacement. $450.

this is now almost $750 in a matter of less than 2 weeks for repairs on this car.

hey jkeaton.. I know what you mean, but 5 years old considering the new technology shouldn't require this much repair and maintenance. I've only got 110,000k on it. that's not even half of the life of the vehicle.

I had a 1999 Subaru that my wife got in an accident with about 2 years ago and never had to replace anything like I've had to do with the Journey so far.

Who knows...

Cheers

Plus the 09's had their share of issues being the first year and all.
