I hear a slight groan when I'm turned full tilt left or right. It only happens when backing slowly.

You can tell if it's the power steering by turning the wheel to left or right lock. If it makes the noise when the car is not moving, it's the steering and this is normal... at least for domestic cars. If it does it while you're moving, it's probably in the suspension somewhere... probably the front end.

Did you demonstrate the sound for the service tech? Doing that could help her/him/it get to the source. I used to have a Saab that would groan and thunk when the wheels were turned... especially when the car was cold. Tightening the suspension bolts helped for a while. However it was a systemic problem that eventually came back.

I think there is a TSB for a groan in power steering. They have to change one of the hard lines that has a orifice update. Check infotrax.com
