Default 2005 instrument cluster replacement.

I have a 2005 Magnum R/T with 105K miles. This car has the Information center'

My speedometer stopped working about 4 days ago. I ran the instrument cluster test by holding down the trip reset button and turning on the ignition. The cluster went into the self diagnostic mode by lighting all the warning lights and putting all the gages except the speedometer through their paces.

According to the service manual, If the MPH gage doesn't respond, the entire cluster needs to be replaced. The dealer wants $940.00 for the cluster and that is not including labor. $740.00 Internet price.

E-bay has several "used" Magnum clusters ($60.00-260.00) for sale BUT the service manual also said that if you install a used cluster from another Magnum, there would be a major system crash because the data (odometer mileage and internal VIN numbers) would not match up. Because of this, they also said theCAMs system could crash.

I can still read the MPH from the Information Center.

Any takers as towhy the speedometer would quit? One blog site mentioned an exploding Cap. Can I DE-PROGRAM a used instrument cluster to make it work with my VIN?

Any help would be appreciated. I really enjoy this car!

My cluster light went out and the dealer replaced under warranty, they did have to get the new cluster matched (mileage had to be set, but I don't know about anything else) before it was shipped to dealer. I have not heard of any crashing issues if you install a used one, but check before you buy for sure.

Dodger 05,
I had mine go out on me, like Strykker said, it was a $100 Deductable fix for me, but I always wondered if I should have left it busted. I know you have too many miles on your car for the Warranty to matter, but does your Odometer still work? I never checked mine before taking in to the dealer, but I was curious. Ifmy Odometer stopped, I should have left it broke for a few years and got more out of my Warranty. (even though there is probably some hiddden Odometer Reading in the Computer somewhere...) I was just curious if your Odometer works while the Speedo doesn't.

since you're already out of warrany, you can just buy a used cluster. the odometer and vin won't match, but it will work. just make sure you use a magnum cluster and not a charger cluster. if you want the odometer corrected, it cost $250. another option is to match the pcm's stored odometer reading to the used cluster's odometer. than can be done with a starscan tool. not leagal, so the dealer most likely won't do that for you. you can turn your 105,000 mile car into a 20,000 mile car.

by the way, i changed out my cluster myself.

Jimmy, to my knowledge, the Magnum's PCM has a working odometer and tracks MPH.My Magnum has the Information center. The info center gives you avg MPG, outside temps, tells you what tracks are playing on the radio, station info, 2 trip odometers and some additional info. you can also set up the car for time delays on lights, etc. You get the point.Typically this is found on Magnums with the steering wheel controls. You may have this option. The '07's are way better. I don't even have the tire pressure monitor in mine. The information center works. The MPH indicator doesn't move.

When I press the two inner bottom buttonsat the same time and hold them for about 6 seconds, The information center goes into some strange system monitor mode. I can read actual RPM, inside and outside temps, oil pressure, fuel amounts in each tank, compassinfo as well as various codes that I don't have info on. I do have the MPH displayed as well.To my knowledge, the pcm stores the mileage.

65standard, thesoftware in the instrument cluster from my 05 R/T show it was written in '04. What would happen if I replaced the instrument pannel from a 06-7 Magnum R/T model? Would it monitor my tire pressure andwould I get the accelorometer?
I don't mind paying (well, I do) the dealer to "update" the odometer. It beats $1200.00. Where do they store the VIN. Do they use the VIN to "turn on" various options?

Why did you replace your cluster? Do youknow anything abouta shorted Cap?Thanks for the input.

I really like this Magnum with the Hemi R/T package. After driving a brown Honda Pilot, there is something harsh and crude when you punch the gas....it's great!

i put a cluster in from an '07 superBee charger. i wanted the higher speedo and tach. i also have the 0-60 timer now and it works.
since your '05 doesn't have the wheel pressure sensors and you don't have the receivers, the tire pressure feature won't work. if you can't find the correct cluster for your R/T, let me know. i have what you are looking for with 20,700 miles on it.

65 standard, That isa fantastic Magnum. I looked at your guage cluster. Is the time on your info center showing 0-60 in less then 4 seconds correct? If so that is incredable. Also nice touch on the tail gate.

What would it take to get your extra guage cluster?? do you have the tool to set the vin and mileage?

Thanks for your assistance.

i don't have anyway to adjust the odometer or vin for you. Dom from Nav2Go can do it for $250.
my personal best on the 0-60 timer is 3.44. that was at the track with shorter drag radials and i didn't correct the speedo for the shorter tires. so actually the time is 3.44 in 0 to 54mph. 3.78 is my best with the stock 20" wheels and the speedo correct.

i would sell the r/t cluster for $170 shipped.
