Default It pays to watch the dealer Inventory

I paid for my new replacement RT/AWD today! I was on day 61 of patiently (yeah, right) waiting for my ever in BG status Vanilla White Magnum. Lo and behold Lou Fusz had two silver ones come in almost fully loaded and AWD. Now let's see wait forever or switch colors? Like I said it pays to monitor their inventory! Saleslady said she had thought about calling me but was unsure she could sell one with all the incentives I got which were now over - yeah, right. Sales manager has a fully loaded car which is pushing 40K, might be a bit harder to sell but can sell it today - and this is a problem? Only required a small sacrifice on my part - car had everything but the factory roof rack and dealer can't get the factory rack - I assume because the factory drills holes in the roof and the headliner needs to be out for that??? I did NOT want the MOPAR door sill to door sill kind. Oh well it's got Sirius and Uhack instead - will also get parksense, remote start, door sills etc when they come in. Tomorrow I'm doing the insurance, waiting forever at the DMV and then driving over to get it - I've got the KEYS already!! - believe it or not I had to drive my old car home as it was still full of junk I have to clean out!
For everybody in BG status surf the inventories!

Congrats! Post pics when you can. I'd love to see it.

There's no way I'd come to let myself or the dealer do that [8D]

I've doen dozens of dealer installed roof racks. Find a good tech who knows what hes doind and it shouldn't be a problem. I've never removed a headliner for roof rack holes, just take some precautions.

Go with a Thule or Yakima rack and avoid the drilling. Besides you can take it off when you don't need it!

Good luck and Happy New Year!

I'm not sory I ordered my Magnum RT. Ordered it in Sept. and got it in Nov. with no compromises. Got just what I wanted and love it. I usually keep my good/new cars for quite a while and have a high turnover in my "toy" cars that I restore and play with.

Actually I would recommend that you do order a car for a number of reasons. One is price lock. Your dealer will tell you what incentives, rebates or program specials (Friends of Chrysler etc.) they can price lock such that if the program goes away before your car gets in you still get the price on your order form. And of course if new or higher incentives come along you get those too, you will not pay more than your deal. Second is leverage. My saleslady said she didn't call about the silver one since some of the incentives I got ended. I thought Sooooo???? You have to understand where dealers are coming from - a sale today is money in the bank, a sale 50 days from now is a crap shoot. Besides whatever disasters can happen in a persons life I can simply say look - 60 days is ridiculous and you can't give me any clue whatsoever when it will be built - give me my deposit back. No judge would let them keep your money. So you see there is a definitive risk for the dealer in not making a deal today.
Third is more leverage. You say why should I pay more for this or that that this car has that I didn't want (as evidenced by your filled out order form) or I really wanted whatever and this car ain't got it. You then say I can always wait. And the dealer is back to the crap shoot again.

I read in my owners manual (during a long bathtub soak) a really good reason the factory rack or any rack that requires holes to be drilled isn't available to dealers. The side curtain airbags are there and I would imagine drilling into one would NOT be a good thing!

Sorry Via500, I disagree. I have owned over 25 new cars in my life, out of those, I have only ordered about 3. I always go on the last day of the month, when ready to buy a car. Salesmen have quoto's to fill and you can always get a better deal towards the end of the month. I check the dealers inventory online and can always find a car that is in stock that I want. No waiting and I drive the car home the same day. One new car I did order came in damaged (in shipment) it was late in the model year and I could not reorder. It was either have them repair car or buy a car in stock, 3 months of waiting to be disappointed. I had them repair the car which I regretted later, paint was always a problem, I sold the car a year later to get rid of it. It was a 1974 Pontiac Grand Am, the car with the soft squeezeable nose.

I bought my RT from my local dealer and drove it home the same day, no waiting.
