Here's how I dealt with this issue the first few times I filled the Magnum. I simply draped the gas cap over the door so that the tether was the only thing touching the gas door and that was only on the very top and the cap wasn't touching anything. This weekend I improvised a 'gas bib' out of some black rubber material I had in the garage. I cut a hole in the top part of the bib that was a bit smaller than the gas filler opening thus ensuring that it could be stretched over the hole and provide a tight fit. I cut the material just long enough that when the gas cap was dangling, it only touches the rubber bib. Also, the bib protects the area where the gas nozzle could touch the paint and possible chip it if I wasn't being careful. When I'm through filling the tank, I put the gas cap back on, fold up the bib and it tucks neatly inside the gas door. . . . .

Well, the magnet isn't working to well. One little bump and the cap falls off. So to plan B. I used a small nylon cable mount and cut one end off to make a hanger. I bolted it to the top hole that's near the door hinge. So now I can just hook the teather strap and let the cap hang without touching anything. I can post a pic if anyone interested.

Here's a pic of the gas cap hanger on the fuel filler door.

I like it. My next trip to Home Depot will provide a variation of your idea. Thanks! This, combined with my rubber bibb will protect that black paint.

I just took the cap off its little strap and keep it in my hand till its filled. Those permanent caps are prob the best way to go though.
