Default 2006 R/T lift gate

My 2006 R/T Magnum’s rear lift gate has 4 oblong drain holes cut in the bottom of the door. I was looking the car over and noticed that these holes were covered over with clear tape. I am wondering if this tape should be removed, or is this a 2006 mod? Maybe they found too much dust going up there and then running out when it rained and making a mess on the rear bumper.
Anyone else checked this?
Maybe the dealer during the delivery prep should have removed the tape.

There is sure a lot of dirt that accumulates on the rear of this car. Five minutes of driving after a wash job, and it is dirty.

PS The gas cap door has a place to hook the cap when refueling.

from another forum:

Those are drainage holes, the car gets dipped in phospate and e-coat, and these are used for the liquids to escape. The holes are covered to help keep moisture out, thus preventing rusting FROM the inside out. There are many more drainage holes, but most get covered with parts.

Are you saying that these holes should be kept sealed? If water gets in there, it will stay there and slosh around and cause rust from the inside.

First off, how does the moisture get in to the inside of that door? If it were sealed from water getting in, then why would there be drain holes?

Old Bob N.E. Ca.,
I have the 2005 RT and the tape is there. And I see their point on the rust. The drain holes are for the manufacturing process only, so the paint, primer and other anti-rust materials can drain out when dipped. Once the back end is finished, I assume that is when the tape is installed.

On the rust issue. Leave your back end open at night, and condensation could be created at the unsealed drain holes. Fog. Water while washing. I'm sure it's the one I didn't think of that will rust my car to nothing. So the tape stays on...

I pulled mine off. I had a Mustang Hatchback years ago that had blocked drainage holes like these, and I had a rust problem after 18 months.
