Default GT vs RT

My son-in-law just took delivery of a new ’05 Mustang GT. My Magnum is hiding in the carport. I guess we both will have to wait until both cars are broken in to see whose Boss.
Anyone have stats on a comparison between the RT Hemi and the GT Mustang?

Old Bob

the GT should turn in mid 13 second times with a manual tranny...i looked around on dragtimes, and it seems that they ususally run from 13.40-13.60.."stock"...into the higher 12s with tuning, pullers, and cai...

magnums on DT vary from 15 flat ( [:'(] ) to 14.1s...if he has an automatic, and youre modded, you might stand a chance...

Hmmm...
He does have an automatic.
What mods would make the RT comparable, or even wipe him?

Headers and an exhaust system will bump your power signifigantly. I have not taken it to the track yet but there is a huge difference. A cold air intake could help as well. On lxforums.com there is going to be a face off between the CAI's this summer.

There is the jetchip as well but I am not convinced of the power gains claimed by them (I have a stage2 chip installed).

Specs I have found on the GT Mustang vs RT Magnum.

Mustang: Magnum:
Curb weight: 3425 4142
HP: 300 @ 6000 340 @ 5000
Torque: 315 @ 4500 390 @ 4000
Red Line: 6250 5800
0-60 5.2 6.3

As far as I can see, it is the weight of the Magnum that is the only thing that lets the Mustang have an edge.
Any thoughts on this?

Bob

That's about what I found too.
I was real suprised to get the GT out of the hole.
He was catching me at the end but both quit at about 85mph with me in front by a fender.
I have the cold air intake & Magnaflow Performance mufflers.

Sorry Old Bob,

The GT will kick your butt unless you do some mod's.

I wish that the Magnums were easier to mod and had more speed equipment available.

Have you considered a supercharger?

At least Nitrous?

I have a cold air intake and Flowmasters on my RT, waiting for someone to come out with a computer reprogrammer that works good.

Tempted to do headers, but they are costly and it is just too hot and sticky here in Florida to be crawling under the car to work on it.

Maybe by this fall, some good speed equipment will be available.

Waiting for the results of the big air intake shootout.

Bob in Florida, turn 65 on the 14th this month

Old Bob N. E. Ca.,

GT vs RT? No Brainer... RT, no competition, at all...

Just tell your Son-In-Law that you want a, um, "Practicle Race".

OK, both of you load up with (5) 150 Pound (average) people, Fully Loaded Ice Chest, Tent and (5) Sleeping Bags. This is a very practicle test, one of my decisions in getting the Magnum. (besides the fact it's the sweetest looking ride on the market) Then see who wins the most in the following (5) categories: 1) 1/4 mile Run, 2) Vegas Run, 3) Up a Steep Hill, 4) Gas mileage on the Vegas Trip and 5) Comfort of the Passengers.

The Magnum should easily win all categories, that is if the Mustang can even get everything in the car for the test...

As far as (2) stolen cars going head to head, the GT better win, if not, Ford should just do themselves a favor and start a National Mustang Buy Back program and begin crushing... We need more Metal for the Magnums...

The Magnum is also a far safer car, much more controllable...

The only Mustang in my neighborhood came around the corner of my street a few months ago. He had some teenagers in the car and wanted to 'show off' the power of the new Mustang... Hit the gas, hit the curb, uncontrollably bounced to the other side of the street, hit the curb, guess he was trying to correct, crossed the street again and hit the Parked RV. (And yes, it was a Dodge!) Mangled the New Mustang... Took off 2 feet from the corner of the Drivers front fender/end... All of this occured over a length of (6) houses! What the guy was doing going that fast in a residential neighborhood in the first place is beyond me. I like driving fast, but 20 MPH in a Residential is pushing it, and 25 MPH is posted! I think they should post 15 MPH, then maybe my neighbors would go only 35 MPH down the street... Nobody believes me about the kid on the Big Wheel thingy...
