Default Climate control just cut out...

I did a search and saw one other post regarding climate control but his was that it kept getting hotter after being shut off for 5 minutes...

My problem was that I was driving about 3.5 hours away and had both the fan and vent controller on auto (air conditioning). Well about 3 hours into the drive the vents quit working. Meaning that when I put my hand in front of the vents, none of them were blowing air... The only reason I noticed is that it started getting hotter in the car... I tried to put it on manual fan and manual vent and turned temp all the way down and no matter what position I put it in the air would not come out of any vent... The fan would blow loud and clear but it sounded like it was just blowing no where, like all the vents were closed.... I tried shutting the car off and waiting about 20 minutes and still nothing... I was looking around under the dash and there is a little hole behind the center console where I could see a metal object and for the heck of I touched it to see if it had any kind of temperature to it, well DONT, it scalded my finger...

Now get this... The next morning, everything worked as advertised.... What did I do wrong? Anyone else ever have something like this happen?

It sounds like your evaporator froze over. When this happens it will not allow air to pass through the evaporator. There is a sensor close to the evap that should cycle the compressor to prevent this problem, it is possible it is bad or misplaced.

Would that totally stop all air flow to all vents?

I left it shut off for a while that same night so that I could see if something was frozen but when I turned everything on manually afterwards it still didn't work. Then in the morning it did...

What is the little metal piece on the driver's side, under the dash, behind the climate control console that gets scalding hot?

I had this happen on a previous car. When the evaporator froze over, the air flow stopped to my vents. It took a while for the evaporator to thaw out. I have not had this problem with the Magnum.

If the evap was froze it would block all air and may take a long time to thaw since the a/c housing is slightly insulated.
I don't have any idea what is hanging, but you should probably have someone look at it.

You need to go to your dealer and tell them what happens. There is a TSB out that corrects this issue. Been there, done it! the fix works great

AH!!! I will check on that today! Thank you!

Is there a link I can go look at what TSB's are out for our Magnums?

This tsb is for the following conditions:A/C cut-out, A/C cut-out at low speeds, A/C cut out at highway speeds(5.7 engine only), and poor A/C performance. It did not mention anything about no air at panel vents, and may or may not be your problem. Like husker mentioned, your dealer should already be aware of this tsb and be able to properly diagnose your problem.

Please update us on the fix.

Well, I just posted a new thread on this same subject... before I found yours. My magnum is doing exactly that. FREEZING UP but the Dealers don't seem to be wanting to fix it. This is the first I've heard of a TSB on the A/C. I've had the car in three times for this already. I'm calling Chrystler about it now. Thanks for the info. Either I will make them fix it or give me a refund.
