Default water outlet housing on 2.7L

I have a 2005 Magnum with the 2.7L, and recently noticed some water leaking from the housing. I figure the part is cheap enough to replace so may as well do the whole thing. Does anyone know much about changing these out? Is it very difficult to remove? It's sandwiched in between the heads, and the husband said he got it loose but wasn't able to get it all the way off while he was trying to locate the thermostat (he's a little worried that he will have to remove the heads to get it out). Should we also replace the hose that goes toward the back of the engine? Hope this makes any sense. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

Are you talking about the black housing on the top of the engine? If so, no real problem. The thermostat is in the lower raditor hose.
