Default Roof rack removal?

Anyone remove their roof rack?

Mine is driving me nuts whistle like hell when you get up around 70mph on a windy day. It's not the cross bars as I have already removed those.

It primarily comes from the front left right above the drivers head where it attaches to the car. Less often the right side will do the same thing.

I'm wondering if I can just pull the dang thing off and use some rubber plugs to fill the holes till I can afford to have them professionally patched.

Besides my problem with noise in the stereo, this is the only complaint I have on the magnum after 20,000 miles (that and I'll never buy a black car in san antonio again. sheesh)

Thanks for any tips on removing the rails.

From what I can read in the service manual the rack covers can be pried off to remove the rack ends. They are held on with friction retainers. I really could not tell if the bolts installed are removable from the exterior. If not, you will need to remove the headliner to remove them from the interior side.

Maybe the racks are slightly loose or the seals are bad/damaged. You may try removing them and checking the seals at the rack base to see if they are ok. I also have the roof rack, but as my car has only about 1000 miles on it nothing is whistling yet.

Maybe someone else in the forum has better advice.

There are studs that mount from under the roof support. The way I took them off was to use a dremel and a cut off wheel. I cut the studs off and then put a clear coat over the exposed metal. Then I went to to a vinyl shop and got some circles cut and put them over it. It was such a close match that you could barely tell. The way to tell was that the factory put the rack on when the paint was soft and it left outlines of the rack base. When I got it fixed, the cost was about $500. Here is a pic of the studs, what really sucked was that there was rust from the treads getting into the roof panel. The cover that wraps around the mounting base just pops off will a some effort.

hey guys,

just wantef to ask you guys if its a factory installed.. i just spoke to my dealer yesterday and told me that in order to install a roof rack to my '05 they need to get the roof liner off and will take 2 hours of labor, so maybe removing it will just need an hour and 356MAGNUM was right on cutting it instead of removing the whole thing..

anyway, let me know if u really want to get rid of ur roof rack.. ill be happy to pay for the shipping and handling.. or pm me ..

thanks

Mine is factory installed.

I didn't want it, but at the time, if I wanted my black magnum without waiting several months, I had to take it.

Wish now I hadn't gotten black. PITA to keep clean (when you live in an apartment) and gets so dang hot in the texas 100+ deg summers.

You otta be able to have it shaved for less than a grand. I had mine done for 900 bucks.
Looks much better. One of my favorite mods so far.

I think I have removed as much as I have added.
Added to the exterior: Viper hood, T-rex grilles, 20s, tint, smoked tails and SXT headlights with custom eyelids.
Removed from exterior: Shaved side moldings, shaved badges, shaved roof rack, shaved sirius antenna, shaved rear wiper, shaved rear washer sprayer and shaved rear gate handle.
