Default RT Exhaust Question - Resonators and More

Ok, I have done searches and found little pieces of what I would like to know, but not all, so I'll try it with a new post.

For those Magnum RT owners that have whacked off the rear resonators (not the middle muffler, not interested in going that far in) and put pipes there:

Is the terminology even correct? I have seen some call the suitcase thing muffler, others say resonator, and have found where some call the rear "resonators" mufflers.

Is it too loud? Less than "CAT-BACKS"?

Does it sound better? Drone on the highway?

Has anyone taken pictures of the work and/or recorded the sound?

Are you glad you did it?

I know, some will say break out the wallet and get the "CAT-BACK", and I know what I would get if I could, but I have a problem with shipping to where I live....

Thanks to all in advance for the information.

How about them Twinkies?

Default RE: RT Exhaust Question - Resonators and More

The suitcase is a muffler, the rear resonators are just resonators - not a muffler.

Here is what I did:

I replaced the suitcase muffler with 2 Flowmaster series 40 mufflers, it is a tight fit. I left the rear resonators alone. Car sounded better but was too quiet, I drove it this way for a few months.

I went back to the shop and had the rear resonators removed, they used plain piping, bent to fit and put the stock chrome tips back on. Car sounded much better, this was the sound I wanted - HEALTHY! I drove the car like this for a year, but it had a lot of drone on the highway. I could not take the drone any more.

Back to the shop, to have the tailpipes replaced with 2 small straight thru resonators, or shorty mufflers (if you want to call them that). This is how my car is today, still sounds good but with NO drone.

If I had to do it over again, I would put the 2 small resonators where the suitcase was, and put the Flowmasters in the rear of the car. Much more room back there.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Flat Eric,
Just yesterday I spoke with my Neighbors Cousin who owns an Exhaust Shop here in Orange County. I have had the same hesitations as you, I did not want to be the 'Test Vehicle' and have my RT in and out of the shop as Bob here has done... So, thanks Bob, I will print out your response and take it to the Exhaust Shop with me! I asked the Mechanic if he had done any Exhaust Mods on the Magnum RT, and his first question was if I wanted Headers! I knew I was on the right track... I told him that my main concern with an Exhaust Mod was not to loose any of the Torque Off the Line. He said OK, and he can actually improve that. He said the best option for the 5.7 is to simply replace the Mufflers, which is exactly what Bob ended up doing in the long run, I believe... He said that it will run better and sound like a V-8! So then I asked about the Drone Issue, Worry #2 for me with an Exhaust Mod, as I do not want to have to get a Louder Stereo System just because I installed a cool Exhaust System... "Will I get a loud drone on the inside if I change my muffler?" I asked. "Yea, if you put on the wrong one!" he said. Both my Neighbor and his friend have exhausts on their Jeeps from this guy and they both sound sweet. He said it would cost about $150 installed to do this Exhaust Mod, so I think I am going to do it next week. I will try to take pictures and let you know how it goes, how it sounds, how it Performs, if there is a Drone and how much it Really Costs... (just glanced over and looked at the Speaker I have never replaced yet...)

I removed everything from the suitcase back. I put two Borla mufflers in place and had the muffler shop bend pipe to replace the old pipe. I left the resonators off and put chrome tips on. I love the results. Better low end, nice sound and no highway drone.

Flat Eric,
Try to just cut out the Center 'Suitcase' Muffler... It cost me $70 and sounds great! Best (and only) Mod yet! I left the Stock Tips and Rear Mufflers in place...

I left the suitcase stock muffler on and replaced the rear resonators with formed pipes with the original tips welded on. I like the sound, could even take it a little louder. I dont notice any drone windows down or up on the highway. Sounds great in town for me. Cost me $50.
