I'm taking the Magnum from Minneapolis to Devils Lake, ND towing my 2500-2800 pound boat with one 9 year old son and a little camping gear.
400+ miles one way.
First time on a long tow trip and gas mileage is the question.
What do you all think I'm going to get?
It was a little tricky to pry the keys from my wife's sleeping hand to take it on this trip.
Our other vehicle is a '03 Ford 4x4 5.4 and it gets 10 MPG pulling the boat.
Dodge manual says to try "D" range, then if shifting alot to put it in "3" Wonder why skipping "4" would be better?
Will post results when back in town. If I can afford to get back!!!!

 

I'll say you get 11 or 12 mpg

 

Tow my RT AWD to NH 170 miles with a trailer. The trailer is not as heavy as yours, just an open utility trailer. I usually get 13-13.5 mpg with cruise locked in 65-70. I do have some hills. Let me know if you get better.

 

14 MPG solid. I have driven this thing as hard as possible and cannot get lower than 14 MPG. So, given all the weight, if you drive mellow, you should get 14 MPG. Let us know at the end of your trip, and have a great time....

 

OK, I was thinking and 14 MPG is based on driving with No Air Conditioner on... Deduct about 3 to 5 MPG if you use A/C... That's about the decrease I see in my MPG with my A/C on...

Hello all, I am back from work travel and can report on the MPG.
Air temps were in the 80's A/C on kept it at 69-70 MPH - car computer was pretty close.
We got as bad as 10.5 MPG and up to 13 MPG.
I was in drive most of the time, but it was hilly in some spots and I put it in third for those stretches.
I used the computer display that appears when you hold the two buttons down for 5-10 seconds and I did not realize that the motor runs at 210 - 212 degrees. The temp gauge stayed right at the 1/2 way mark though.
410 miles one way, and I did not mind riding/towing that far at all. Love those seats!
Boat ramp was a piece of cake for the loading/unloading of the boat each day.
Did NOT see one other car pulling a boat in the camp ground.
My wife received an ego boost as the Magnum got 4 - "Does that thang have a Hemi?" 3 - "Nice car" and 1 golf cart with a Mom and three girls that came to a stop to admire the car.
Oh, and we did catch some nice walleyes and enjoyed the lake.

I tow a dolly with a car on it. On flat Ohio interstates, I just left it in drive with no problems at all. Even used cruise control set at 70+ most of the time. If its very hilly or slower than 55 mph, I just leave it in 4th so overdrive dont kick in. I got lot better mileage, closer to 20. I normally get better than 25 unless i do a lot of in town driving. I didnt trust the gauge so just for a test, I filled it to the brim much as it would hold and drove exacly 100 miles to make it easy to calculate. Then filled it back up. So I knew without any computer errors exactly what it got. My friend with a new Daytona got the same result. I think the result was 25.3 mpg.

 

I think ethanol in the midwest crushes our gas mileage and I hate to say it, but the rest of the country will be forced to use that "corn" gas soon.
