Synthetic Oil
Mobil 1 is good. You can spend more, but according to numerous INDEPENDENT tests you can check on the internet, the difference is almost nothing....forget the "hype" and just buy a 5 quart jug at wally world for $22.......it's also "factory fill" for the Dodge Viper if that tells you anything.

I use synthetic after the first oil change myself. It can go longer between changes which makes up for added cost and its far superior to stress and heat than reg oil. On a newer engine Mobile 1 is fine...it has more solvents which will cause older engines to leak. I use Castrol Synthetic in all my cars and never had an oil related problem. Its in my RT, vettes, Ferrari, GT40. Dont use it in a new engine, because it will not allow the rings and bearings to break in correctly.
A coupl eof questions:
Has anyone changed their own oil? I am considering AMSOIL or MOBIL 1 and would like to do it myself. So far though, I haven't been under the car to see how accessible the filter and drain plug are.
Also, AMSOIL has a special filter to use with their product. Does MOBIL 1 have a filter designed for their oil?

I change mine because no one can get it on the rack with the sidepipes. Filter and drain plug are ez, but there is a plastic cover over the bottom of the engine bay. It comes down with 4 screws across the back if I remember right.
Thanks. I haven't been under the car for a good look around yet. I suspected that the plastic cover was going to be in the way though.
How hard is it to get to the filter?

I have used Ams oil in the magnum and i like the fact that i dont have to change the oil every 3K -I change the oil every 10k and it looks clean. I have 36K on the car now and will be on the road in the south so when i get back i will change the oil again at 41K.
I use Mobil one.
The filter is a piece of cake to change on the HEMI. Remove the plastic cover and you'll see it up high on the passenger side. I didn't need a tool to spin mine off, I used a piece of sand paper in my palm to grab the filter and it spun right off.
The plug in the oil pan is angled at 90 degrees so be prepared. It will shoot straight out the back a good foot before gravity takes over and brings it down. It doesn't point down even a little bit.
Take a good look at how the plastic sheild is installed before you pull it off. Specifically the plastic tabs at the front and how they lock in with the other pieces.

The salesman at my dealer told me that synthetic oil should not be used in these engines bacuse of it's cylinder shut-off feature. He gave some further explanation but I cant remember what it was. Shall I assume he's full of it and has no clue what he's talking about? I tried to tell him that Dodge is going to have an SRT-4 version of the Caliber coming out that has 300hp but he said I was wrong. Just another reason why I'm thinking he was clueless.
