Did it start popping and carrying on after you hooked up the tach?

To help us understand your problem better, would you mind using a little punctuation.

It does seem like a timing issue.

Has it gotten worse over time, or does it seem like it's the same?

Are there any driving conditions that make it worse (such as full throttle, highway cruising, street-level stop and go).

Being it sat for 5 years, it could be a carb, fuel issue, try changing the filter and run a couple of tanks of premium (93 octane) and a bottle of Sea Foam in her, if there are any gummy deposits in the carb and lines that should clean it out. My 84 5th Ave had similar issues it sat for 18 months before I got her, and that cleared up her problem.

i had a 1984 ply 318 2 barrel . it put black on the plugs. it had a cracked intake intake, letting exhaust in to the intake. the give away is the the plugs are black. if you go to a 4 barrel intake, the carb cable and the linkage must be swapped to the 4 barrel ones. if you dont the carb cable will bind, and might hold the carb open.
