I read on another forum that the 440-3 blocks do have different coolant holes on the block deck. I would still do the headgasket experiment. If you know someone that has a B/RB passenger block and heads lying around you could check that way too. If the overheating problem is caused by blocked coolant passagesin the heads why not drill new holes in the block deck? Just a thought as you might destroy your block.

I hope someone will still reply to this thread- I have a 77' Dodge Powerwagon 4x4 with a 440 from a motorhome. My question is when this motor was pulled and then gone over the guy who built it put 516 close chambered heads on it uping the compression to the point where I have to run 91 minimum octane and even then it still sometimes pings. I'm tired of having to run premium fuel and having to add lead additive. So what is the best set of heads can I put on instead (Keep in mind I want to run 87). I know it does have a very aggressive cam and a Demon carb. with headers-but it does idle normal. Where could I find some plain heads and would anyone want to trade for my 516 close chambered heads ?
Also I have another motor I pulled out of a 79' Powerwagon and supposedly it wasn't the original motor but rather a 400 wedge ? I've tried looking for numbers on the block but found nothing-any idea's where to look and once I do find some numbers is there a way to tell what it is ? Thanks.

You need a good set of 906 heads. I had a set of 516's on my 440 that was in my 69 RoadRunner and it needed 93 octane. I had a 67 short block and the compression was like 11.5 to 1 or more. It finally detonated a piston into pieces.

Exclamation 440-1 in motorhome; Non-tapered Sparkplugs; What length?

Hello vintage mopar fans,
I'm needing some closet guru advice. I know, somebody out there has all this knowledge hidden in their head and catalogued like a picture. Not much info on the 440-1 in the motorhome forums, they only post about the 440-3 and elude there are differences in length for the 440-1 plugs, but do not have the specifics. Please help.

I have a '77 cast 440-1 block in a '78 dodge M400 motorhome (Executive; The Diplomat II) I've visually verified the head threads are NOT for the tapered spark plugs & DO require the standard crush washer/gasket type spark plugs. What I need to know is the length of the plug threads or comparable brand/models of plugs. There are length & seating differences between the 440-3(heavy duty) and 440-1 spark plugs. I need confirmed info please. Many Thanks!
