does the 98 neon have a digital or mechanical speedometer?

Also the speedometer will occasionally(it gets more frequent) drop to zero and stay there, only if i pound on the gauge will it come back to life. Any ideas on why this is doing that?

 

nevermind i searched on the forum and found out why its dropping, still wondering it if is mechanical or electrical?

 

The speed sensor gear is mechanical. The signal of course would be electrical.
