Broken timing belt, Bent valves?
Be about 95% positive it has bent valves, it depends on what the RPM's were when it broke though. If you can get it cheap enough, get it and then just buy a head for it, lots of guys on here have plenty of them sitting around... Try using the second gen subsection.
I've broken down several 2.0 engines, and like Jr. Mechanic said, it all depends on what RPM the engine was at when the timing belt broke. New OEM valves will cost around $160 for all 16 valves (thats how much I payed for my new valves recently off of DodgeParts.Com)...a shop will probably charge a good $1,500-$2,000 to do the work...but its really not that difficult at all to do the job yourself if you have any experience. The only way to be sure though is to pull the head and inspect the valves yourself, but more then likely the vavles are bent...
Actually there is an easy way to tell is you have bent valves, A cylinder leak down test can be done even with a broken belt, just remove the rocker arms so all the valves are closed.

1st neon i ever owned broke a timing belt about 6 days after i bought the car......ideling at a stop sign when it happened.....bent valves......
alot of times if at lower rpm's the belt breaks, it wont mess up the valves....its when the people try to get it started again that bends them

I s there any reason I couldnt do a compression test instead of a leak down test? I have a compressin tester.

The reason you cant do a compression test is because if you valves are open, the piston (s) Will hit the open valves.

A compression test can only be done if the valves are functioning so you would have to replace the timing belt first. This would be a waste of time if the valves are bent.
With the rocker arms removed (to close the valves) a leak down test applies pressure to the cylinder and the bent valves are easily identified by the air leaks.

I was reffering to do a compression test with the rocker arms removed. But the more I think about it, if the intake valve is not operating then you would not be able to draw in enough air to build pressure. So I agree that leak down is the best test.
