yeah, you can use a ratchet to take the nut off the top of the strut and a pair of vise grips and a lot of patience and probably a lot of time too. The impact wrench makes the job faster and easier.

 

I agree I would'nt do it any other way, but an impact wrench and a compressor is expensive if you are just doing struts.
