Default Neon Won't Shift out of Park

I have a 98 Neon (automatic tranny) that will no longer shift out of park. I have taken out the center console clear down to the guts of the shifter. With the car running, brake pedal pushed, and button on shifter pushed, I am able to manually shift out of park. I have to move the pin along with the gear shift to do this. What could be the problem? and Where do I find the problematic part located? Thank you in advance for the help.

When I say the "pin" it is at the base of the gear shift and it pushes down against the Shift Interlock Lever. When vehicle is in park said "pin" is in the forward most "groove" which would be the slot for park. It is located just out of view to the left of the diagram you sent the link for.

so are you saying the pin no longer moves with the thumb button on top?
and you have to move the pin manually while pressing the thumb button?

sounds like a trip to the wreckers to get a shifter
