Default 2002 neon le power steering pump

hello, so going to start off this post with letting people know that im still very new to the driving world, and i still dont know alot.

so i just bought my first car about 2 weeks ago and it was a 2002 neon le and it was in great shape, excepts for a few tweeks here and there, the power steering being in pedicular. It seems that the power steering fluid leaks out between where the pressure line and the resevour connect (i have been toping it up everytime before i drive it), and the pump is very winny to the point where it can be irritating. So i would like to know if anyone could give me advice on the issue, and tell me if any other year of a neon powersteering pump, pressure line, and resevour, would work with me car also, i have been told that the years 2000 to 2005 should be interchangedable but i'v also have goten conflicting information that only 2002 works in it i would like to know what is true about it. plz and thanks its appreciated.

i recently had to replace the power pump in my 95' and used a 99'. i would assume that if 1st gen pumps r interchangeable than 2nd gen would be also, but not completely sure, sry. i bought my pump new, which i usually dont do but they allowed me to trade in my old 1 so it ended up costing me less than a junkyard piece would have. hope this helps a little good luck

Go to your local junkyard and find a 2nd gen neon wreck and if you are lucky, they did not just cut the lines and find yourself two new-to-you lines. Replace the leaky line(s) first. Even if you need a new (or new to you pump), if the fluid level leaks down, it will whine like all get out. If you can get the local JY to let you buy the pump with the idea that you may return it (some do/some don't unless it is defective) if you don't use it, then get it too. If your lines to the reservoir are leaking, replace them too. Any 2nd gen neon PS and lines should work just fine.

When your pump is full, does it whine then? Is the belt completely tight to spec? Most pumps groan some when sitting completely still and you do a stop-to-stop steering wheel turn (worst use case senario), but if the hood is closed and you can still hear it moan or whine easily, then it may be that it got too low in fluid one time too many and it needs to be replaced as the pump mechanism is worn.

If you buy a brand new one, you will have to rent a Power Steering pulley puller to get your pulley off the old pump to put onto the new one in most cases. A good used one from a JY usually avoids that headache. In any case, bring your old one with you so that you won't have to pay the core charge. Some JY's don't do cores, but some do.
