i just bought a new 2000 neon from a guy works great BUT sometimes when i stop at a light THEN go... it has trouble going into 1st or sometimes it will then it will pop out into neutral.. kinda loud noise comes with it.... anyways. any ideas what it is? if its expensive? also could i just start using 2nd gear to go for now? will it damage anything?ps ( all the other gears work just fine!!!)

 

Shift linkage needs to be adjusted. I would also look at the clutch pivot arm on the clutch pedal and make sure the plastic looking locking clip is not broken. Over time ,the plastic locking clip will break, and or wear away and cause inconsistent clutch engagement/disengagement.
