There's lots you can do to make the auto better, but for what you'd spend, the manual tranny swap makes much more sense. The big gearing of the auto makes sense for high power turbo cars where the 20-30 extra ponies aren't worth the time spooling back up between gears. But then the auto trans really wasn't meant for high torque...
