racing/6 speed tranny
i have a 96 5 speed sohc neon that i am going to mod what im wondering is if there is a racing transmission or a 6 speed transmission available or that will fit my motor if not what would you recomend for the best performance

The discussion of making a 6speed manual transmission has been discussed at length several times on the big org. The cost has been estimated at $16,000 IIRC.
That being said, most naturally aspirated neon owners prefer the 3.94mtx. This mtx came in all 1995-1999 5sp DOHC neons and and 1995-1999 sohc 5sp stratus.
There are other cars that use the NVT-350 mtx, such as the 4cyl Dodge Avenger, 4cyl Chysler Sebring, n/a Eagle Talong, n/a PT Cruiser and n/a Mitsubishi Eclipse. These four models do not use a clutch cable featured in all 1994-1999 5sp neons, so a bell housing swap is required to use the 5sp mtx from those four cars. The same applies for 2gn neons using the NVT-350 mtx. There are two variations of the NVT-350 3.94 mtx. The main difference is the final drive gear.
All of the aforementioned cars use the acr style 3.94mtx, which has the .81 5th gear. This shorter gear is not prefered by those that have to do extensive highway driving. At 65mph, this transmission runs at about 3300rpm. A bit high.
The non acr 3.94mtx has a .72 5th gear. The 5th gear is not as agreesive, and favored by those making longer commutes daily.
So a 3.94 of any style wold be beneficial to your sohc neon IMHO.
