Whining ?transmission? 2000 neon...help
Was hoping someone could tell me their opinion on why my 2000 neon is making a whining sound...im almost positive it is either my transmission or possibly pulley system...it has been doing this for approx 2 yrs started off faint and got louder...my tranny fluid is fine...guess's anyone, please???
care to elaborate? does it whine when you rev up the engine in park?
or is this vehicle speed related? how would you describe it? whines louder faster as you go? if so, what speed? does shifting thru different gear change the noise?
we can guess all day long, there are hundred of item that can whine in a car. Care to take a Video with cell phone or something and post it on youtube?

It is constant...as soon as i start her she is whining and gets a little louder with acceleration...its almost like a power steering pump whine but mine is a higher pitched whine and doesnt change when i turn the steering wheel so i think i have that eliminated...i apologize but i cant take a video at the moment...n e more specific questions i will be more then happy to answer!!! Thanks!!!
If it whines even in park, then it can't be the trans.
It is probably an idler puller or worst case needs an Alternator. And of course, might need belts too. It really shouldn't be an expensive repair.
The only think you can do is have someone look at it. Probably remove the belts and start the engine. If noise gone with belt removed, spin all the puleys by hand and see if you find anything.

Alternator was my other guess...can you tell me why the alternator would be sounding like that...i dont know for sure but was told by someone that my alternator is also the cause of the popping and crackling sound i get through my stereo???

My belt is pretty new...i replaced my water pump about 6 months ago and replaced the belt then and while doing that i didnt notice n e thing while turning the pulleys...and it was whining before that just so you know...
sry, my mistake, your car don't have an idler pulley. Probably needs an alternator.
Alternator is driven by a separate belt. you can remove the alternator belt, start the engine, if noise is gone, you find the problem.
it sound like that because it has a pulley that's rotating with the engine. as you rev up the engine, the rotation of the alternator goes faster too, so it gets louder.
If you want to ask "what If I leave it alone as is?"
answer: probably nothing, but it will get louder and louder, and when it completely fails, your battery light will come on, and you will have like 15 more minute of eletricity to drive.
Not sure about the radio noise, are you talking about FM/AM or CD too? maybe your radio or Speaker is on it's way out.
