Can't figure out this problem! HELP!!!!
I’m having some minor trouble with my 2001 ES Dodge Neon andcan’t figure it out. It currently has 220,000 miles, original transmission andengine. Runs great expect at idle. Here is what happens:
Basically, the engine idle RPMs drop from 800 (normal) to400 (almost stalling) when I stop at a stoplight or stop sign but only underthese conditions; only when the engine is at normal operating temperature, onlywhen the outside air temperature is above 60 degrees and only when the car isin a forward gear (drive or 1st). If any one of these conditions areNOT met, the problem does not occur. The car does not erratically rev at idle,it simple and smoothly drops from 800 RPMs to 400 RPMs and stays there (unlessis stalls).
If all the above conditions are met, I am able to bring theengine back up to the normal 800 idle RPMs by slightly pressing on the gas, turning on the AC or shifting into park, neutral, or reverse. Once I have doneone of the above and return the car to the previous state (i.e. release the gas, turning off the AC or putting it back in a forward gear) the engine remains at thenormal 800 idle RPMs until I drive away and come to another complete stop.
There are no codes showing. I checked each cylinder’s compression and all arewithin the normal range. Dealer could not find anything wrong either. I thoughtmaybe it could be a faulty air temperature sensor but the dealer said if it wasa faulty sensor there would be an engine code read out. Dealer thought it mightbe a vacuum leak or fuel supply problem but could not find anything and dismissedthese because it only occurs under the specific conditions above. There are noother problems with the car but I am worried that if the ignore this problem,it could grow into other problems. HELP!!!
