So my Neon was overheating one night and I could hear what sounded like water bubbling or trickling in my air vents. The windows were already starting to fog up really bad so I stopped to check my antifreeze level and it was empty. I then poured some in thinking somehow I ran out but I heard it pour out of the bottom of the engine so it wouldn't keep any new liquids. Now someone told me its probably the heater core. I would like to know if it really is that or if there could possibly be any other explanation before I start buying parts and attempting to fix it myself or just send it in to the auto shop for $500 worth of labor. Thank you

 

fogging windshield is definitely a sign of a leaking heater core. You may have more than one issue.
have the cooing system filled and pressure tested to locate the leak/leaks.

 

Would you know where exactly its located? I have to take the dash apart right?

 

Heater core is in the dash, yes. But if you are adding coolant and it is pouring out of the bottom of the engine, the heater core is the least of your problems.

 

Well I dont actually know the exact point of exit. I just know that I hear it pouring out right away as soon as I pour liquid in it

 

Find out the point of exit before throwing parts at it.

 

Ok so I found out it is coming from the back of the engine bay on the firewall. There seems to be a short hose that is on the passenger side that IT is leaking out of



My finger is right on the short hose. You can see the liquid below it

 

that 90* rubber elbow is the evaporator drain. if coolant is coming out of that spot; the heater core (which shares space in the hvac box with the evaporator) is leaking pretty bay.

 

Yep, that's a heater core leak.
