Simply put, my son started the car and drove off to go see a movie. He said he smelt something strange and then saw fluid dripping from under the car. He limped it home (about 2 miles) and parked in the street. The leak was coming from the coolant overflow drain hole back by the firewall. It looked initially like the proverbial strawberry milkshake of death and it had an oily sheen as I rinsed it. I know the transmission cooling is through the radiator and I suspected that a breech had occurred. After it cooled, I opened the radiator cap (not on the radiator for some reason) and it was full of froth. Obvious this is what was on the ground. I used a 1/4 inch piece of tubing and shoved it all the way down the tranny fill hole and extracted some fluid. I expected to see a frothy mess but instead, it looked fine. A little dark but translucent. Picture shows the coolant on the left and the tranny fluid on the right. I'm not sure if it had that orange coolant in it (never paid attention). The history of the car is that I purchased it in August 2018 from an auto repair shop. It had belonged to their receptionist and she no longer wanted it after it blew a head gasket. The shop repaired it, added new tires and some other things. It has run great until now. My question is... is this a tranny coolant line problem and I'm just lucky to catch it in time that it didn't muck up the entire tranny or could it be something else? I'm open to suggestions/thoughts.
Still haven't nailed down the problem. A few symptoms that may or may not be related:
gunk in the radiator
not gunk in the transmission
Disconnected tranny cooler hoses from radiator and tied them together with some heater hose and clamps to eliminate that from the equation
flushed block and radiator with hose until there was no more sign of the 'gunk'
Filled radiator with water and started engine.
did not belch white smoke
let run almost to operating temp
upper radiator hose was rock solid. Don't know if that is normal or due to filling with water instead of antifreeze/anti-boil
goosing the engine, some liquid out tailpipe (water) but may be due to having been sitting for 2 days in pouring down rain (some condensation is normal)
goosing engine, some white smoke but not much. May just be liquid in exhaust steaming now that engine near operating temp
no fluid dripping out of tranny line fittings on radiator (at least not a lot or that I could tell. Everything still wet from flushing)
Stuff I drained from radiator the other day was placed in a clear jug and let sit. Here is what it looks like now. Thoughts?
