to upgrade or not?
ok so i just broke 100k miles on my car and I was thinking about putting some aftermarket parts on it (carbon fiber hood, cold air intake, exhaust, ATX TB, etc.) but then again I could save the money trade the car in for a newer car in a year and then have something with a lot less miles, so I was just wondering how other peoples first gen neons held up, over the 100,000 mile mark. Oh yea and it has a very small oil leak noticed a couple drops on the garage floor the other day anyone else have this or should It be looked at. Its nothing major at the moment (unlike my good ol 76 power wagon that is coverd in 90wt and 10-40
First, establish where the oil leak is coming from. Being a '98 it has the dreaded bad head gasket that is well known for blowing out, unless it has already been replaced with the MLS head gasket. I like the newer car idea.
Yeah when my sister was driving my neon (when it was hers) it blew the head gasket on it... had it fixed and then it still smelled like burning oil and sometimes to this day it still smells like that and cant figure out why. It's not burning oil or anything and it's not leaking but still i have no idea.
You probably have some oil residue on a part that heats up and generates the smell. WHICH part that might be is hard to say.......
my 97 neon has close to 120000 on her and she is doing fine, after some slight modifications of coarse, but im probably looking into getting one of howell automotives 2.4 liter engine soon.
oh yeah... thats probably what it is. If i keep my car i will look into it when i go for a tear down and build up.

i just hit 100,000km on my 99 neon just got it emissions tested, so i had the engine looked over, and the mechanic said it was in great shape. besides replacing the head gasket twice (both times were early on, and were covered thank god) havent had a single problem.
