car painting question
What is the best/quickest way to sand the pain off the car? i would like to have it painted another color and to save on cost I would like to 'prep' the car myself...
thank you for any help!

you dont need to sand it completely down, you just need to remove the clear coat....use some 220 or 320 grit sand paper, and just start sanding, just make sure not to use too gritty of sand paper, otherwise it will gouge the paint and after the repaint, you will see swirl marks......if you have time, do it by hand.....but if you have access to a air compressor, go out and get a D.A. it shouldnt cost too much but it will save you hours....
remember, dont take it down to the metal, just remove the clear coat, it will be easy to tell, just sand until the dust and sand paper starts turning the color of the car....then move on
you can have a whole car sanded and preped in no time at all...even by hand

Dont go all the way to the metal even if I am changing the color on it? i was thinking of going from red to yelow or red to black..
and I do have an air compressor , I'm going to have to look this D.A. up.

I havent gotten the time yet to work on the paint, but i read somewhere that you can use a wax and grease removal to get the clear coat off... i think might have read it wrong though.

Prepping is the hardest part of the paint process. Do it RIGHT or you will be sorry!

Thank you for the heads up! i am not sure if i can do much damage to it anyway, the car is already peeling the clear coat off, itself and the sun is doing the rest, bah. [:'(] i'll put pics up of the damage already done from riding wear.. maybe someone will be able to direct me. : -x
I'll probably start sanding it over thanksgiving break.

Depending on the cars current color and the color you want it to be you may need to remove the paint entirely. Red will bleed through many other colors and the base coat paint will effect the top coat paints appearance unless your going with black. If you want to have it a certain color and have it pure you will need to either sand it all the way down or primer it before repainting it, which you would need to do anyway if you take it all the way down.
