Starter Relay
ORIGINAL: neon chic
the relay itself is the only problem i've had it make a clicking noise when i turn the car off that i'm told is from the relay if that helps... its not under warranty so should i takeit to the dodge dealer down here or would it be the same to just take it to a mechanic? will the dealer charge to look at it since its not under warranty?

Poor connection in the relay socket may be causing it to overheat damaging the relay or there may be a problem with the starter drawing too much current. I would pull the relay and look for evidence of overheating first.
Most places such as Pep Boys, Firestone, etc. are full of retards and they seem to hire only the mentally handicapped. One person I have known well for over 20 years has worked at several of those places and he changed plugs on his own car and rolled back in with it puffing loudly wondering what was wrong. He had one of the plugs dangling by the wire.[sm=icon_rofl.gif]Find an individual shop with an ASE certified mechanic and ask for a few references, you can easily get screwed anywhere, but this should help weed out the lying thieves and morons.
Glad to hear you got it figured out and fixed finally.

Good to hear you found the problem, So, I take it that the relays you replaced were not bad at all. When you think about it the relay probably wouldn’t click very loud, it was probably the solenoid you heard. I had a starter go out on my 1995 Neon last summer, sometimes it would start and sometimes only click. I’m not sure about the 2000 but the 1995 used one of two starters a Hitachi or a Bosch and no one here handled parts only total rebuilds for $200+Cnd exchange more for the Bosch. I ended up taking it to a local rebuild shop that has an excellent reputation, they replaced the solenoid, brushes, bushings, drive assembly and tank cleaned the case. I picked it up the next day (it looked brand new) all for around $100.
Starter relays can click fairly noticeably, I had the relay on my '87 Shelby Z malfunction, but it was causing the car to start on it's own at random and even though they are all 5-spds. they didn't have the kill switch on the clutch pedal that keeps newer cars from starting without the clutch pedal being pushed down.
